چکیده

We suggest that data from American Sign Language (ASL) provide overt evidence for Partee’s and Stone’s claim that natural language has anaphoric constructions in the temporal and modal domains (Partee 1973, Stone 1997). We provide four arguments. (i) Like nominal and locative expressions, temporal and modal constructions can establish loci which can then be indexed by later pronouns. (ii) As is the case in the nominal and locative domains, anaphoric constructions can involve singular, dual, trial and plural pronouns. (iii) When the antecedent is existential, patterns of inference are obtained which are characteristic of E-type anaphora. (iv) Finally, temporal and modal anaphora gives rise to patterns of ‘locative shift’ which are also found with geographical locations. The last observation suggests that temporal and modal reference is particularly similar to locative reference.

Generalized Quantification and Anaphora Across Ontological Domains: Evidence from ASL

It was shown in Schlenker (to appear) that in ASL one and the same anaphoric element has nominal, temporal, and modal uses, and that in all three domains generalized quantifiers can introduce loci (= positions in signing space) that denote what is often called the 'maximal set', i.e. the maximal set of objects that satisfy both the restrictor and the nuclear scope. But the anaphoric status of r...

Second Language Working Memory Deficits and Plasticity in Hearing Bimodal Learners of Sign Language

Litt le is known about the acquisition of another language modality on second language (L2) working memory (WM) capacity. Diff erential indexing within the WM system based on language modality may explain diff erences in performance on WM tasks in sign and spoken language. We investigated the eff ect of language modality (sign versus spoken) on L2 WM capacity. Results indicated reduced L2 WM sp...

Donkey Anaphora: the View from Sign Language (ASL and LSF)*

There are two main approaches to the problem of donkey anaphora (e.g. If John owns a donkey, he beats it). Proponents of dynamic approaches take the pronoun to be a logical variable, but they revise the semantics of quantifiers so as to allow them to bind variables that are not within their syntactic scope. Older dynamic approaches took this measure to apply solely to existential quantifiers; r...
